But, in the end, she doesn’t care what happens, she’s going to give everything she has and everything she does, without attachment to the result. She starts out wanting to get the guy, keep the love and defeat the illness. He’s probably the most prolific author ever on transcendence, and it’s only through the love of this woman that he is drawn into this journey to walk that path. He’s written all of these brilliant things and it’s through his love for her and his relationship with her that he’s had to embody all of these things-total surrender, total transcendence. By the end of the film, he’s the student and she’s the teacher. So, he’s the teacher and she’s the student. He’s a brilliant psychologist and philosopher. I think of the character arcs in the film. It prompted them to step up and become more. But for Ken and Treya, the illness ultimately catalyzed their love. Many of us have known someone who has had a terminal illness. In order to articulate it into a film, it needed to say that. That’s what was woven into the pages of the book.
I thought, why is that? The thing about this story is that it’s about love beyond life.

When I read Ken’s book, it was devastating and yet, somehow, I was totally inspired. Movies are immersive and we can relate to something in a way to feel more excited about life. Sebastian Siegel: When I think about it being that many years, I think about those stories that inspire us at some point in our lives. How do you feel now that it’s about to come out? Suvari, who recently gave birth to her first child, Christopher, with husband, Michael Hope, also spoke about playing a woman who receives the worst news imaginable almost at the very moment she finds true love, and then how she battles for her life and eventually comes to terms with her fate, buoyed by her eternal love for her husband.Īngela Dawson: Sebastian, it took you 10 years to bring this story to the screen.

Siegel, best known for his role on Tyler Perry’s The Haves And Have Nots and various guest-starring roles on TV series including Hawaii Five-O and Lost, opened up about directing his first narrative feature film-a passion project that took 10 years to bring to the screen, and casting Suvari, with whom he had become acquainted a few years ago when they co-starred in the true crime drama The Murder Of Nicole Brown Simpson.
